Since Fall 2013, UC Berkeley undergraduate and graduate students, professional staff, faculty, administrators, and community experts have been working together to create an institutional food security model. Phase 1 of this work focused on the creation of emergency relief infrastructure.

The UC Berkeley Food Pantry is an emergency relief food supply for all UC Berkeley students–undergraduate and graduate –and staff members. The Food Pantry, located in the basement of MLK Student Union (Room 68), serves students and staff who need core food support.

Did you know?

Since 2010, 1 in 5 UC Berkeley students reported having to “skip meals to save money” in the UC Undergraduate Experience Survey.
In Fall 2013, our Financial Aid & Scholarships Office launched the Food Assistance Program to provide additional funding to food insecure students who have maximized their financial aid package. To date, over 200 unduplicated students have benefitted. For more information: follow this link.
In Summer 2014, we launched the UC Berkeley Food Pantry to provide emergency supplemental nutrition support to the 39% of undergraduates and 23% of graduate students in need.
In Spring 2019, the food pantry expanded its services to staff and faculty and revised its 5-item and 2 visits per month policy to its current operating rule: “take as much as you need, as many times as you need, while being mindful that this is a shared community space.” To date, pantry sees over 4,000 unique visits from the UC Berkeley community each month, up from just 200 visits in 2014.
If you or someone you know is in need of emergency food support, please read the following details about our UC Berkeley Food Pantry:

Students and staff can visit the pantry as many times as they need and take as much as they need while being mindful that it is a shared resource. Pantry operates on a self-assessed need basis; there are no eligibility requirements.
The pantry is not for students and staff who need supplemental snacking food, but rather, core food support.
Please bring your Cal ID to each visit.
